Clare's Journal

personal account of happenings in the life of Clare Reynolds

Shhh… Don’t tell anyone..

Ah, it’s hot… Just got back from a run… I’ve been trying to exercise everyday and so far so good.  Once I get started I always think why did I ever stop “I love this feeling”. But sometimes life gets in the way and it’s always nice sleeping in that little bit extra.. LOL

So, it’s been a busy few weeks..  Time is creeping up on me and in just under 5 weeks I’m leaving for the UK.  Last week I found an apartment to rent which is in Marylebone, in the centre of London.  Seems like a nice area but I’ve just taken it for the first month until we work out where to settle for a while.  I’ll be working with some great people in the industry so it should be an exciting time.  It’s always a little scary when you step out of your comfort zone and put things on the line, but no matter what, it will be exciting and adventurous and that’s when I learn the most.  Uncertainty can bring change and growth and that’s what I crave.

Another bit of exciting news.. Daniel and I have set a date for our wedding!  The 24th of October 2009!!!!  I’m not totally into the full on wedding thing so my friend, Nikki who is a wedding planner is helping me.  Actually she’s organizing it and I’m helping her.. hahhaha.  It will be a relaxed beach wedding in my home town in Australia. I’ll be overseas for most of the planning which I’m sort of happy about..Shhhh.. Don’t tell anyone. hhahaaaa.

Blubbering like a baby

It’s another hot day here in Brisbane. I’m sitting waiting for the phone to ring….  A reporter is going to call to do an interview for the city newspapers.   While I’m waiting, I’m catching up on emails and responding to messages.  Since the show aired a few days ago I have had such an amazing amount of people contact me.  It’s so great to see people enjoying what I do.  Very humbling… On Friday night I was able to see the scene from Private Practice and as soon as the song started to play I burst into tears.  Can you believe that!  I had no idea I would react that way.  This really has been a dream of mine and it was just all too much. hahha.  So once I had stop blubbering like a baby, I watched it again… and again and again… On Sunday, I invited a bunch of friends over, firstly to drink champagne but also to watch the show.  It was a really fun night!! I’m very lucky to have such beautiful friends…. So he still hasn’t called… mmm think I might go and make myself some lunch… a tuna sandwich… yum… talk in the next few days. I’ll let you know how the interview goes…xx

‘Don’t Give Up’ played on ABC’s Private Practice tonight!

I couldn’t hardly sleep last night knowing that today was the day that my first song was to be played in a TV show.  This has been a dream of mine since I was a kid and it’s moments like these that I reflect on the journey and how its treated me.

It’s moments like these I remember all of the love and support I’ve had from my friends and family throughout the last 4 years.  There’s been some amazing highs, but also terrible lows. I guess that’s why they call it life.  I’m so grateful right now…

I fell off the face of the planet….

Friday the 7th of November 2008

I know I know… I fell off the face of the planet.  It’s been 6 months since my last confession but I’m back.  Life got in the way and I got slack with my diary entries.  So what has happened since we last spoke? I’ve been working my little bum off with writing new songs and in the last month or so we’ve been demoing them.  My life was turned up side down for a while as my future father in law was taken into intensive care with a virus in his brain.  It was a life stopping time and we spent most of our days sitting in hospital rooms, waiting for a miracle.  Despite what the doctors said we got our miracle.  He survived!!!  It’s been a really hard few months and it’s by no means over.  Chris is working with speech therapists and is on the slow road to recovery.  All we can do is be a solid support for him and time will tell what will be.

I’ve been gigging a lot and working as an acoustic trio. Myself, Daniel and Leigh.  I’ve moved away from playing the piano all the time and it’s been so nice to get up from behind it and sing my ass off.  I’ve done a couple of cool support slots in the past few months.  I opened for Wendy Matthews in June and then Vanessa Amorosi in October.  Both went really well!! My new songs are pretty different from the old stuff. I guess that’s bound to happen. I’ve certainly changed and grown over the last year.  The new songs are happier, and intense with a rock/pop thing happening.  I’ve been listening to a lot of the music I was grew up with.  Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin and I’m totally in love with Bob Dylan.  I’m also loving Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters and Johnny Cash.  I’ve been song writing with a top LA songwriter with the intention to give them to other artists.  We have written a big diva ballad and are planing on pitching it to some great artists with the voice to pull it off.

I’ve decided my next move is to the UK so I’ll been heading off for London in March for 6 months.  I’ve got a lot of contacts over there now so the plan is to write, tour and record. It should be another adventure full of unknowns but I’m up for it.  I need to explore…

Well I promise to keep writing so I hope you keep reading:)

What a day!

Well, it’s been a full on month away.  From the moment we left home my brain has been working overtime.  Work, work, work.  Today we let go and had an incredible day off.  We hired a car and slowly drove up to Whistler.  It was raining this morning so we couldn’t really see much on the way up but it was still so beautiful.  The fog on the mountains was just magical.  We were almost there when we noticed a gorgeous brown bear sitting up on the bank, eating grass. We stopped by the side of the road for ages.  He was literally 3 metres away from the car, happily munching away.  It was crazy!  I actually got really emotional seeing him (we thought he looked like a boy). The tears were falling.  I wasn’t expecting that I would see such an amazing creature in the wild.  It may be nothing to some people who have seen loads of bears but for me it was a life changing experience.  I’m so fearful that one day we will wake up to find these perfect animals no longer exist, and that mankind has wiped mother nature out.  I am still optimistic that we can turn things around so when I saw this perfect bear completely unaware of it’s own beauty in his natural environment it made me feel on top of the world.
The other exciting thing that happened today was that we stopped at a bungee jump site and Daniel took the giant plunge.  It was incredible to watch!  There is no way in the world I could do anything like that.  I’m completely scared of heights and I found it really difficult even being out there on the bungee bridge.  To be there to watch Daniel do it was such a rush.  It made me realise that nothing is impossible and hopefully one day I will be able to take the jump too.  Nothing risked, nothing gained.
We were both high on life for the rest of the car trip back to Vancouver and we are still on a high now.  I am in love with life!!!!!!  We leave for Australia tomorrow and I’m looking forward to getting home.  Over the last month I’ve learnt what I need to work on and the direction I need to take.  I have a lot of work to do and I can’t wait to get into it.

Australian Export Showcase

Our gig last night was super fun.  We were invited at the last minute by the Australian Showcase organisers, New Found Frequency to come and play.  The night was being recorded live in New Found Frequency’s amazing new mobile recording studio that’s been built inside a coach.  It’s very cool!

We played first up and did 4 songs. Three of those were brand new and so I don’t have recordings of them yet.  I’m really happy to have my first live recorded gig.  (Well I will have soon anyway – after they mix it all)

The place wasn’t too full at 6:30 but there were all the other Aussie bands there and a few industry people that caught my show and said they were impressed.  I don’t know if anything will directly come from the showcase but I got some great feedback, met awesome Australian bands and now have a live recording of the night so I’m very happy.

New Music West Showcase

So it’s 3:30am and I just got back to the hotel.  I had my New Music West showcase tonight.  It went really well although there were a few hick-ups.  A few days ago I went over to the venue to check it out.  When I arrived I saw that there was no piano in sight as promised.  I asked the bar guy and he said that they had gotten rid of it a couple of weeks ago.  Nice!  I emailed the festival organisers to tell them our situation and the response was “I suggest you hire a keyboard”, so Daniel and I decided to change the set and do an acoustic guitar thing instead.  It was actually really fun to just sing although it was a little strange at first because I didn’t know what to do with my hands… but I ended up lovely it.  I’ll have to do it more often.

Anyway, we arrived at the Backstage Lounge at around 11:30pm this evening and the place was pretty full.  We soon discovered that the lady sponsoring the night had slipped one of her friends into the line-up.  A band that wasn’t scheduled to play.  That pushed everyone’s start times back.  We thought that 1 AM was way too late, but now it was looking like 2 AM before we’d play.  We got chatting to the a band that were on directly before us (Angela Harris – great artist!) and they offered to do a shorter set so that we at least had a chance of an audience.    We ended up going on a little after 1 and our set went really well.  Everyone seemed to love it. I even sold a few cd’s.  Thanks so much Angela.
Also, we have been invited to play at the Australian Export Showcase tomorrow night.  We will be opening up the night and the whole showcase is being recorded live for a web stream.  I’m so happy that we will be playing again.  Time for bed…xx
